Kanan Dume to Sandstone Peak Trailhead
Stunning landscapes and sweeping vistas await those who take this journey through the one of the most scenic sections of the Backbone Trail. These paths wind us through lush oak woods etched by perennial steams that give rise to an abundance of plant and animal life.
Climbing up the chaparral-covered slopes reveal the diversity of landscapes within the Santa Monica Mountains – rocky outcroppings and dramatic peaks surround pastoral ranchlands as winding roads carve their way through the mountain range. Panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean illuminate the beauty of the Channel Islands beyond as the elevated trail parallels the curving coastline.
With countless opportunities to experience the beauty of nature, connect with fellow travelers, and unplug from the grind of everyday life, this trip will be a cherished memory for years to come.

The Woolsey Fire burned roughly 30 miles of the Backbone Trail and devastated more acres within the Santa Monica Mountains than any other fire in recorded history. This section of the Backbone Trail has unfortunately been impacted and continues to heal and regrow. The Trail Magic Adventures’ team has been donating funds along with man-power to help rebuild the many trail systems and communities that have been destroyed. We appreciate your patience and understanding during this time of renewal and restoration. If you would like to help in the recovery effort, please visit the Santa Monica Mountains Trails Council and the SAMO Fund to look at volunteer opportunities.
